A dress tartan in scarlet, forest green, black and pale blue, threaded with fine yellow and white overchecks — and cut on the diagonal, so the plaid runs at an angle rather than square. The reverse is soft chambray blue, and a red wired edge holds each loop. That bias cut is what stops it looking like everyone else's tartan ribbon.

The same tradition, tilted slightly. Far more interesting.

Style note — the tree: Cut generous lengths and twist as you tuck them in so the blue reverse shows at the folds.

Style note — gifting: A wide bow on kraft paper with the tails cut on the diagonal to follow the pattern.

Two Ways to Style It

On a classic red-and-green tree. Weave it through with gold stars and pine cones — the diagonal plaid gives the eye something to follow rather than a flat block of pattern.

Along a mantel garland. Loop it through spruce between brass candlesticks, letting the chambray blue reverse catch at the twists.
